Hello everyone, this is my first time trying to post some of my writing in English using a blog. I'm very excited to have this new experience, but please don't think that I'm a perfect writer. However, I'll do my best using my own style.
Every time when I decide to start writing my diaries I give up, because I'm always thinking about stupid things such as notes and I said: ' Should I start to write about present or the past first? what should I do if the notes do not have enough paper? what if I write something wrong and I have to remove the paper? what will happen if I write some of my hidden secrets and one of my family found my diaries and read them!' ...etc
Then I just forget about writing and keep all of my special events in my mind. However, when I see this quotations '' Keep a diary and someday it'll keep you'' and '' Only good girls keep diaries. Bad girls don't have the time'' I think that I have to start writing again >> ooh NO NOT AGAIN! (T_T)
Few days ago, I was thinking about - what our tutor (Sam) told us - my first post. actually I found it very difficult to decide how can I start, for me always the most difficult step is the beginning, so I thought it's better to start with something easy that I know. Therefor, I'll write about my hometown Jeddah.
'The Bride of the Red Sea' is a nickname of my hometown Jeddah which located on the coast of the Red Sea. It's the second largest city in Kingdom Saudi Arabia after the capital city, Riyadh. I was born and I have lived there. It's a lovely city, but to be honest I don't like its hot and sunny weather in the summer. However, in the winter its nearly cool weather, but unfortunately without rain as people in Jeddah always said '' rains come only once a year '' (>_<)
The area of Jeddah City has a distinctive regional speech pattern called the Hejazi dialect, alternatively known as Meccan or Makkawi.
Landmarks
'The Red Sea Mermaid ' have many significant landmarks such as old buildings, old markets, malls and shopping centers, resorts, international restaurants, Amusement parks, and King Fahd's Fountain (which is the tallest water fountain in the world).
According to Wikipedia, the population of Jeddah city currently stands at over 3.4 million.

King Fahd's Fountain
''The fountain jets water 312 meters (1,024 ft) above the Red Sea. It was donated to the city of Jeddah by King Fahd, hence its name. The fountain is visible throughout the entire vicinity of Jeddah. The water it ejects can reach a speed of 375 kilometres (233 mi) per hour with a weight exceeding 18 tons.'' ( Wikipedia 2010 ).

If I write about Jeddah of course I'll mention one of 15 Universities and Colleges which is King Abdulaziz University (KAU) where we are - I mean the students of this course - studying at, which divided to two main campus: male campus and female campus. There are around 2,000 teachers and more than 37,000 students.
KUS's Faculties contain:
Faculty of Arts and Humanities
Our faculty is the second biggest faculty in the KAU that contains nine departments:
Arabic Language & Literature.
European Languages & Literature >> which we are studying at (^_~).
English Language Centre.
Geography.
History.
Library & Information Science.
Sociology.
Psychology.
Mass Communication.
Islamic Studies.

Now here are some photos I took myself last year >> of course from female campus
Note: In the female campus we are not allowed to take photos because we wear normal clothes without Abaya, so I took this photos the day of the final exams when most of the students went home. *evil eye*

That's all for now, I know that's not enough but I hope this writing gives you some little idea about my hometown. It's not as you saw or knew from the media. Next time hopefully it will be more interesting (^_^)

ReplyDeletebut I think now students aren't allowed to sit there any more, that what I heard (-_-)"
ya I heard the same thing but don't know why:)
ReplyDeleteWell done! There are some great ideas here, and seeing the photos of your home country was very interesting too. Keep writing! -GG
ReplyDeleteThanks Gareth, appreciate your comment.
ReplyDeleteI particularly like your comments about travelling on a double decker bus. For me, the upstairs right-hand side seat at the very front is one of the finest viewpoints on Earth, wherever the bus is going! My DJ name is 'Double Decca', in honour of this pinnacle of human invention. I'm a big fan; and I'm not the only one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tGyu3Zm9Hx8
ReplyDeleteTake a look at the incredible new designs for London buses here: http://www.tfl.gov.uk/corporate/projectsandschemes/15493.aspx
By the way, the problem you've encountered with bus drivers is easy to explain. The bus companies have lots of problems with people using stolen cards, or cards belonging to someone else, to travel without paying. They are supposed to check that the person shown on the card is the person who is actually travelling. I'm not sure, however, how we can best sort out the confusion here. Any ideas, anyone? - GG
